Self Regulation
This is a nice video by Barry Johnson, an occupational therapist in Australia introducing the development of self regulation.
Alert Program for Self-Regulation
The Alert Program uses a car engine analogy … sometimes my engine runs FAST, sometimes my engine runs Slow, sometimes my engine runs just right. The child participates in a group where we go through 12 mile markers as we experiment with different sensory strategies and their impact on our engines. Families and teachers support this process by beginning to label their own engine speeds and modeling application of the ideas. It was developed by Williams and Shellenberger and their leader’s guide walks through activities to facilitate their group series - there is also an online course available at TheAlertProgram.com
When Kashish Venaik was an OTD student, she completed her capstone project with us in Spring 2026 to btuild a structure to support future OT fieldwork students as they learn how to facilitate self regulation groups! The following are videos that Kashish has created to help support families and students understand the process.
